Peek behind the aviary doors of The Flying Squadron...
At The Steel Cauldron, our Owl Experiences are more than just magical – they’re rooted in care, connection, and the quiet trust between handler and bird. Behind every graceful swoop and owl selfie is a dedicated guardian: Amy Jo Lawrance, who cares for a remarkable group of feathered friends known as The Flying Squadron.
This is your chance to discover what life is really like for our owls when they’re not charming guests at birthday parties, school visits, and spellbinding flying displays.

🦉 Meet the Squadron
Each owl in Amy’s care is a different species, with their own name, quirks, and role in the magical team:
Toki – our wise Great Horned Owl
Frankie – a stunning Bengal Eagle Owl
Björn – the noble Ural Owl from Scandinavia
Juneau – a breathtakingly beautiful Snowy Owl
Xena & Zelda – our graceful Barn Owls
Bubbles – the newest recruit, a curious Tawny Owl with a big personality
Each owl lives in their own roomy aviary – think horse stable, but for magical birds. Inside you’ll find perches, pebbled windowsills, water baths, sand underfoot, and owl-safe toys for enrichment. (One owl is especially fond of tearing up pineapple tops – a true feathery mischief-maker!)
🌅 A Day in the Roost
Owls, by nature, spend much of their day resting. But that doesn’t mean they're idle! Nearly every day (weather permitting), Amy takes her birds out for controlled flying sessions outdoors. These aren’t just for fun – they provide essential exercise, stimulation, and positive training reinforcement.
Each flight is part of their routine – flying out, circling, then returning for a tasty reward. While the birds don't roam freely (for safety reasons), their flights are full of purpose, power, and trust.
Their diet? 100% raw meat, as nature intended. They mostly enjoy chicken chicks (a by-product of ethical farming), and Amy carefully manages each bird’s weight to ensure they're healthy and happy.
🎓 Training Through Trust
Amy’s owls have been with her since they were fluffy fledglings, hand-reared with love and patience. Training begins with baby steps – from shuffles to hops, runs to first flights – all rooted in positive reinforcement and gentle bonding.
On rainy days, the birds practice indoors with high jumps or simulated hunting games. In their aviaries, enrichment items like balls, ropes, and boxes keep their minds just as active as their wings.

🧪 Health and Harmony
The owls are checked daily for signs of illness or stress. Most common concerns, like mites or worming, can be handled at home—but Amy has trusted avian vets, including a raptor specialist, on hand if needed. Thankfully, with the care and observation they receive, vet visits are rare.
These birds are deeply loved, individually known, and nurtured as part of Amy’s extended family.
