There's something truly unforgettable about standing just a few feet away from a majestic owl as it spreads its wings, lifts into the air, and glides silently across the room. At The Steel Cauldron, our Flying Squadron Owl Experiences aren't just a display—they're an adventure for the whole family.
Led by professional handler Amy Jo Lawrance, these events are the perfect blend of education, entertainment, and a touch of real-life magic.
🎉 Preparing for a Magical Moment
Our owls don’t just turn up and hope for the best—every event is carefully planned for their comfort and yours. Because they’re hand-reared from a young age, our owls are completely at ease in busy, human environments.
Just like socialising a puppy, Amy takes them everywhere as babies so that by the time they’re full grown, a school assembly or birthday party is just another day in the magical office.
Before an event, they travel in purpose-built wooden transport boxes inside Amy’s van—each with its own perch, astroturf floor, and plenty of ventilation. This keeps the journey calm and safe (and occasionally chatty—Xena the Barn Owl likes to talk the whole way home!).
🛡️ Safety First – For Owls and Humans
During the experience, the owls are tethered to their perches for safety—just like how a dog wears a collar. Their leather anklets and soft jesses are attached to a special swivel and quick-release leash so Amy can ensure they’re safe, settled, and secure at all times.
Each owl has their own space, and they are never allowed contact with one another, as birds of prey can be territorial.
But don’t worry—while waiting their turn, most of them are snoozing or preening contentedly in their safe zones.
🧚 The Experience Itself
Whether it’s a full-day festival or a cosy classroom visit, our owl events are designed to delight and inspire. During the day, each owl gets time to shine—usually one or two flying displays in between relaxing on their perches.
You’ll learn about their species, habits, and even their individual quirks (ask about the owl who loves pineapple tops!), all delivered in a friendly, engaging way suitable for children and adults alike.

Amy rotates which owls attend events to make sure everyone gets time off, and limits events to one per day to avoid unnecessary travel. If an owl ever shows signs of stress, they’re immediately removed from display and given quiet time in the shade or inside.
The Flying Squadron are not just beautiful to watch—they’re calm, confident birds who love what they do, because their wellbeing is always put first.
